Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars are the last teeth to erupt. This occurs usually between the ages of 17 and 25. There remains a great deal of controversy regarding whether or not these teeth need to be removed. It is generally suggested that teeth that remain completely buried or un-erupted in a normal position are unlikely to cause harm. However, if these impacted teeth are in an abnormal position (a dentist can show you this on an x-ray), their potential for harm should be assessed. [dentalhealthwithavision]
Preparing for the Operation
In my experience, I was advised to take mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid an hour before the operation. This, I later on learned, will help avoid excessive bleeding during the operation.
During the Operation
Before the actual extraction, the teeth and the surrounding tissue will be numbed with a local anesthetic. Once the anesthetic has taken effect, your dentist or surgeon will cut through your gum and may remove some of your jawbone to reach the tooth.
After the Operation
Bleeding may occur for several hours after tooth extraction. To control it, dentist would normally position a piece of clean moist gauze over the empty socket and you’ll be advised to bite down firmly. You will also be instructed to avoid hot liquids as these may dislodge the clot. Foods should be restricted to a liquid diet until all the numbness from anesthesia has worn off.
