Belgium will decide whether to ban the burka to be the first European country to ban wearing the garment.

The proposal was to jail women for up to seven days for hiding their faces. This would means burkas and other full face veils would be outlawed from public.

“The notion of recognizing people in the street is essential to maintain public order,” said Daniel Bacquelaine, who proposed the bill.

“It’s also a question of human dignity. The full face veil turns a woman into a walking prison, and we have widespread cross-party support to have this item outlawed.”

French President, Nicolas Sarkozy described the garment as a ’sign of debasement’. “They make women prisoners and deprive them of their identity.”
