A giant iceberg has been spotted floating in an island halfway between Antartica and Australia, a very uncommon sight said Australian scientists.

The iceberg measures 2,300 feet long, about the length of seven football pitches, with an estimated depth of more than 1,000 feet. It is probably part of one of several larger icebergs that broke off Antartica’s ice shelf, Australian Antartic Division glaciologist Neal Young said.
“If the current trends in global warming were to continue I would anticipate seeing more icebergs and the large ice shelves breaking up,” he added.
Scientists believe the iceberg will break up and melt rapidly. However, before its melting, it could present danger to ships navigating the area.
Icebergs are great masses of ice, often the size of hills, which float in the polar and northern seas. They float in their own brine, transforming from solid to liquid, evolving in form.
