Breathtaking fireworks display and cultural performances marked the launch of Istanbul’s year as one of the three European Capitals of Culture along with Pecs in Hungary and Essen in Germany.
Opening celebrations included light shows arranged at seven locations across the city, which symbolize the seven hills on which ancient Istabbul was built.

“Istanbul is a European city,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the country’s prime minister.
“With its heart, its culture and civilisation, its people, its past and future, it has always looked towards Europe.
“Istanbul has shaped European culture and has been shaped by it.”
Istanbul is already recognized as one of the world’s great cultural capitals with its rich heritage of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Roman history.
