Active smokers, not only those who stop, put on more weight than non-smokers, this is a finding based on a new study that links nicotine poisoning with weight gain.
The finding challenges the myth that smoking makes you slimmer. A study was done at the University of Navarra to bust the myth that links smoking to weight loss.
Researchers from the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Navarra (UNAV) evaluated the link between two cardiovascular risk factors: the ‘nicotine habit’ and the increase in weight when smokers stop the habit and when they continue smoking. They analyze 7565 people over 50 months.
“The results are crucial for considering prevention programs,” said Francisco Javier Basterra-Gortari, a researcher at UNAV.
Weight gain in people who stopped smoking during the study was higher the more cigarettes they smoked a day. The researchers confirm that smoking is not an effective way of preventing obesity.
