A study has found that having sisters apparently make us nicer people.
The study, done in the U.S. suggests that growing up with at least one girl in the family prevents feelings of loneliness, guilt and fear. Any sibling, but especially a sister, whether older of younger, also encourages a spirit of generosity and reduces the risk of depression.
In the family, it is sisters who really make a difference. It is thought that girls encourage to open up, meaning that problems are shared and talked through. They are also likely to be more caring.
“Siblings matter even more than parents do in terms of promoting being kind to others and being generous,” according to researcher Laura Padilla-Walker from Brigham State University in Utah.
“For parents of younger kids, the message is to encourage sibling affection. Once they get to adolescence, it is going to be a big protective factor,” added Walker.
